#1558 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
August 29, 2025 God has a way of cajoling me out of potential funks. While I am undergoing the early stages of my rotator cuff surgery (and thus no golf), I have the opportunity to create the video for the End of Year party for our Senior Men’s Group. My students and I used to make short movies in my Creative Writing classes, and that was one of my favorite creative outlets. However, I haven’t done that in 14 years. A challenge and an inspiration. Thanks, Lord

#1559 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
August 25, 2025 Do it now. As I intend to walk with God in the present, this message keeps popping up. Of course it applies to daily responsibilities (…feed the dog), self-discipline (…I should exercise), and prayer (“Let’s pray together” not “I’ll pray for you..”). The most important application has to do with human contact: showing affection, not just feeling it; calling the old friend, not just thinking about it; reaching out to the person in pain, not just sympathizing; being charitable to those enduring disaster, not just clucking my tongue, God moves in the present. Move me, Lord Jesus

#1560 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
September 10, 2025 Here is Billy String’s take on my insomnia:
I’ve had days as black as nighttime
And nights that lasted years
I spent a thousand hours on my knees
Broke down and started praying
But I was pleading with the wind
Just to never feel the difference in the breeze
They say heaven knows the road is slow
Lord, how the hell would heaven know?
Just where am I supposed to go from here?
How much longer now before I’m in the clear?
Nothing fosters hyperbole (literary & emotional) like insomnia.

#1561 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
September 15, 2025 The first book that convinced me that I could have a personal, interactive relationship in the present with Jesus Christ was Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence. He was a monk working in the monastery kitchen, and that’s what he focused on each day. I pursue that constancy. It’s like the psalmist urges us: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” (Psalm 34:8)

#1562 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
September 7, 2025 Re-learned today: “It’s a gift to joyfully recognize and accept your own smallness and ordinariness. Then you are free, with nothing to prove and nothing to protect. Such freedom is my best description of Christian maturity because, once you know that your ‘I’ is one with God, you can, ironically, be quite content with a small and ordinary ‘I’.” –Richard Rohr
First learned in 1965: “When you ain’t got nothin’, you got nothin’ to lose.” –Bob Dylan

#1563 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
August 29, 2025 It’s always difficult to see someone in my family going through a troublesome time. Why is it so much harder for me to trust God for their problems than it is for mine. That’s ridiculous. My anxiety doesn’t do a thing for them or for me. Increase my faith, Lord Jesus
