How to fix a marriage…
#1427 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
March 11, 2025 Marital advice for me and you: “You must choose to live by encouragement rather than by expectations. The way your spouse has been for the past ten years is likely what he or she will be in the future apart from your loving encouragement and an intervention from God. Love puts the focus on personal responsibility and improving yourself rather than demanding more from others.” –from The Love Dare
The “speck and the log” parable (Matthew 7:3–5) teaches against the tendency to focus on others’ faults while ignoring my own.

Wisdom from the links on Golf Tuesday…
#1428 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April 1, 2025 My good friend told me on the golf course that his word for 2025 was “joy.” What a good idea! I immediately decided that mine was “hope.” I have had a gloomy disposition as regards the future, especially about this country. The Holy Spirit wants nothing to do with that. I see many reasons for hope based on God’s promises. Gloom and negativity breed gloom and negativity. God says “Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.” (Psalm 31:24) Amen

When too much is not enough…
#1429 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April 18, 2024 “Too much of a good thing is wonderful.” –Mae West
Ah Christians, I’m not sure how Mae meant it, but I know what it means for us: “…just as we cannot believe too much in God or love God too much, so also we cannot hope too much in God…because it is a theological virtue, there can be no excess.”
–Venerable Bruno Lanteri

#1430 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April 23, 2025 When things go wrong–I don’t mean catastrophes, I mean the everyday inconveniences of life–it is far easier for me to become frustrated than to turn the matter over to God. My prominent thoughtstream is: I don’t want to deal with this. In rare moments of insight, I realize God is using this situation to re-form my character. In even rarer moments, I cooperate with Him.

The Lord as my psychiatrist…
#1432 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April 4, 2025 Every once in awhile I will abandon my disciplined meditation–timer set, measured breathing, focus on a verse, keep my mind still–and I will just spill my guts about every little thing bothering me, like my blog and my putting and my cravings and my absent-mindedness and my imagined gripes, and I will ask Him what I should do. He tells me to keep pressing on.

A homily for Family Sunday…
#1433 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April 20, 2025 God has a very good reason for family and friends: “Only two things are the test of our love: our kindness and our patience. How easy it is to be kind and patient to someone we are just meeting for the first time, a stranger. The real test comes in our family, between our friends, not just in the big moments but in the little moments of everyday living. When it happens that we are kind and patient, then we will know that something more than ourselves, someone more than ourselves, is there. We know the Lord is present. In those moments we know what love is.” –Fr. Edward J. Farrell
