#575 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April, 2023. A springtime wonderland! Sitting on my back porch, April 21–two red-bellied woodpeckers fighting over suet, mockingbirds loving the stale Pillsbury flaky biscuit I put out, hummingbirds making their first appearance (including a ruby-throat), 75 degrees with an imperceptible breeze, Willie on my speaker, golfers playing a little later now, and, above it all, the crows. What a privilege just to sit here! God speaks to me through spring to demonstrate that life is a gift to be cherished.

It’s a peripheral Golf Tuesday…
#576 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April, 2023. I always write these alone and tonight my wife is out here. Who invited her? Haha. The word is fluidity. Jesus moved seamlessly from one situation to the next, never exercising control but rather responding to what was in front of Him. That is how He wants me to be. If I establish a pattern, it is easy for me to set expectations. Expectations can be shackles (a continuing lesson I get from golf). God lives in the present.

#577 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May, 2023 From C.S. Lewis: “God became man to turn creatures into sons: not simply to produce better men of the old kind but to produce a new kind of man. It is not like teaching a horse to jump better and better but like turning a horse into a winged creature.” A Christian does not have to change–a Christian has to be willing to be changed. The difference is subtle but dramatic.

#578 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
February, 2023. There’s nothing like a dose of Leonard Cohen late on a winter’s night. Leonard is evocative…(adj. — bringing strong images, memories or feelings to mind). God speaks to me through art:
“I know that I’m forgiven, but I don’t know how I know
Can’t trust my inner feeling, inner feelings come and go”
or: “So come my friends, be not afraid/ We are so lightly here
It is in love that we are made;/ In love we disappear”
or: “For the innermost decision/ That we cannot but obey –
For what’s left of our religion/ I lift my voice and pray
May the lights in the Land of Plenty/ Shine on the truth someday”

#579 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
February, 2023. The Bible is the Word of God, but it is also a human document–written and read and interpreted by humans. That leaves a lot of leeway for things to be misunderstood. I do wonder what the Apostle Paul, who is still alive, would say if he were introduced to a society with homosexual relationships looked at differently than in his era.

#580 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
February, 2023. Karen and I had dinner with her college roommate and husband tonight. I was struck by two things–how blessed they have been and how active they have been in giving back…made me feel like a bit of a slacker. I am reminded that every good thing comes from God–including our response to His goodness.

#581 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May, 2023 An exciting opportunity has arisen…I get to do a cross country road trip, just me and my daughter and a dog, from Seattle to Ann Arbor. If that is not a 74 year old father’s dream, I don’t know what is. “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)
