Standing on the promises…
#1448 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April 15, 2025 “The Lord is my strength and my shield.” (Psalm 28:7) This verse becomes increasingly promising as I grow older. I’ve always considered the circle of life ironic. I have gone from utter dependence to the ‘height of my powers’, and now I am circling back to dependence once again–only in this second visitation I have no mother awaiting me to nurture me through. This can be a perilous descent. But wait! I no longer have to rely on my power to defend me. I don’t need my own resources to protect me. I have a strength and a shield. Whom shall I fear?

A scenic Golf Tuesday…
#1449 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 4, 2025 I don’t mention it much because most lovers of nature understandably dislike golf courses, but God’s handiwork is widespread at my course and one of my favorite things about golfing. We saw a mallard couple with 11 babies yesterday. Eleven! My friend got a photo of a bobcat as he was going by the 13th green. The Mississippi kites return and have their babies every Spring. The turtles are everywhere, every size. The baby Canadian geese go through the fastest adolescence imaginable. I haven’t even mentioned the trees and the sky and the wind. It’s easy to get caught up in the game and lose sight of it, but it’s like walking through a cathedral out there. (bobcat by Britt)

. Can’t buy me love…#1450 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
February 23, 2025 St. Paul said the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil and Jesus said a camel can get through a needle easier than a rich man can enter the kingdom of God. I get it–those are both warnings to me. Money attempts to worm in and seduce me in many different ways. I’m blessed that we don’t have grave financial concerns. But wealth continually makes a play for supremacy on the spiritual battlefield of my heart. That’s a fight I don’t want to lose. Generosity is another fruit of the Spirit.

He is who He is…
#1451 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 6, 2025 providence — (n.) — the protective care of God or of nature as a spiritual power. Someone I love recently attributed a bit of good fortune to providence…well, yeah, but that’s like giving your child a gift and saying it is from Santa Claus. I know full well where the good fortune came from.

This applies to me–if you’re reading, it applies to you
#1452 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April 14, 2025 “The matter of obedience is God’s business and not ours. We cannot do a single good act unless God first gives us the desire for it and then empowers us to do it. But that is the point. God IS giving you the desire–you would not be reading these words if the desire was not already bubbling up inside of you.” –Richard J. Foster

Surely goodness and mercy…
#1453 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 10, 2025. A statue in New Orleans (Mirror Labyrinth by Jeppe Hein). It’s kind of scary. Sometimes it feels like that is how my life is coming at me–uncontrollable, fragmented, polyperspectively (just found that word). I am all over the place. And then I remember–I am no longer the center of my own life. I just have to keep following…

Family Sunday, teacher and pupil…
#1454 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 29, 2025 God uses our dog Spice to teach me faithfulness. Every day she trusts us to have food and water available. She is exhilarated to go on a walk with us. When we go out, she takes her perch on the sofa by the front window, awaiting our return. She loves to sit with me on the back porch. At night she settles in at the foot of our bed. I have asked the Lord to teach me to abide and I think that’s why He got us a dog.
