Tues­day, Novem­ber 8, 2022 My next march­ing order: *Look for oppor­tu­ni­ties to serve. I tend to wait for God to put me in a sit­u­a­tion where I can express His love. My ten­den­cy is to be a pawn. Move me where You want me to go, Lord. But I’ve been giv­en the pow­ers of a knight or a bish­op or a castle–I can be cre­ative. (I don’t play chess, so this metaphor could be sketchy) I know that the Holy Spir­it moves me to ini­ti­ate, not just respond.

Mon­day, Jan­u­ary 16, 2023 We senior men usu­al­ly have a $5 or $12 game when we play. Even though it’s a small amount, it’s dif­fi­cult for me not to allow the mon­ey fac­tor to affect my game and my atti­tude. Of course, because it’s fun to win and it’s mon­ey! But God is hav­ing none of it–when I zoom out, I real­ize the mon­ey is incon­se­quen­tial and the con­di­tion of my heart is fun­da­men­tal­ly impor­tant. Both pride and greed are dark alley­ways. Stay in the light.

#471 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
Mon­day, Octo­ber 4, 2022 I have made an incred­i­ble dis­cov­ery (thanks to my Sun­day school class) that I sus­pect some of my chris­t­ian friends already know about. It is a web­site called The Bible Project–a series of ani­mat­ed videos that tells you just about every­thing that you could ever want to know about the Bible. There is a video for each of the 66 books of the Bible–but also videos on How to Read the Bible, Lit­er­ary Forms, Themes, Word Stud­ies, and a boat­load of stuff. The ani­ma­tions are clever and cre­ative and enter­tain­ing. I have slogged through the Bible from begin­ning to end twice in my life. Karen and i are only through about a third of the Old Tes­ta­ment, and we both find it enlightening.

Sat­ur­day, Jan­u­ary 7, 2023 He spoke like a thun­der­bolt through my beloved Avett Brothers:
“Would­n’t it be fine to stand behind
The words we say in the best of times…” from “Life”
My writ­ing HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY does­n’t mean a thing if I am not respond­ing to what He says. I’m not talk­ing about fol­low­ing orders–there is a cer­tain way God wants me to be. He wants me to be that way regard­less of who I am around. How to com­port myself is pret­ty well summed up in the fruit of the Spir­it (Gala­tians 5:22–23). If I am nur­tur­ing that fruit, I am stand­ing behind my best words.

Wednes­day, Decem­ber 13, 2022 Aware­ness of His pres­ence. I keep com­ing back to that. If I can car­ry that aware­ness as a fact of life, then every sit­u­a­tion becomes man­age­able. It does­n’t have to be con­stant inti­mate con­tact. Just know­ing He is back there is enough to spur me on to love and good deeds…

#475 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
Thurs­day, Jan­u­ary 19, 2023 My emo­tions are such tricky things to deal with. The Spir­it can advise me to be silent, but if I am upset the words will come burst­ing out. The Spir­it can urge me to be con­cil­ia­to­ry, but if I feel hurt I want to remain cold. The Spir­it may be stir­ring me to move, but if I feel apa­thet­ic I will prob­a­bly sit. A large part of self-con­trol is sim­ply lis­ten­ing to the Spir­it instead of respond­ing to my own emotions.
