Time waits for no one…
#1524 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
August 11, 2025 So injuring my right shoulder has opened up a 20 to 25 hour hole in my week. I have been asking God what He wants me to do with this time. This is what I’ve come up with: maybe join a men’s Bible study at my church on Friday mornings; increase my efforts to reach out to people–by phone, by email, in person–especially those I know to be going through hard times; perhaps a different writing project (?); cook more; possible volunteer opportunities; rehab; crossword and jigsaw puzzles; reading. Unless God powers the engine, they all seem like striving after wind.

Golf Tuesday, baiting the hook (a fishing metaphor)…
#1525 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
July 22, 2025 My son (under the umbrella) having his dream (and mine) come true–all three of his daughters practicing golf! I must say all three have remarkable hand-eye coordination and would learn the game quickly if they had a mind to. During my own parenting days, the number of times I could play in a year went from about four to forty once he became interested in the game. Zack needs to keep praying.

Let go and let God…
#1526 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
June 25, 2025 This from my quiet time: “Yet a fourth consideration in holy obedience is this: Don’t grit your teeth and say ‘I will! I will!’ Relax. Take hands off. Submit yourself to God. Learn to live in the passive voice–a hard thing for Americans–and let life be willed through you. For ‘I will’ spells not obedience.” –Thomas R. Kelly, A Testament of Devotion

I want the t‑shirt…
#1527 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
July 26, 2025 I saw a guy at the gym who wore a t‑shirt that said: NOTHING IS GIVEN. I realized I believed just the opposite: Everything is given…

He’s got the whole world in His hands…
#1528 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
March 31, 2025 I believe in the human spirit. It is God-breathed into each one of us. We all share it–no one can stake a claim. This means we are all inherently good (but it doesn’t mean we will stay that way). It’s the best part of us and produces the best out of us. I see it most clearly in great books and music or any kind of art; in great moments in sports; and best of all in human kindnesses that appear right in front of my life. How sad that most people don’t realize that their spirit wants to be united with the Holy Spirit of God who gave it to us in the first place. How happy I am to know!

This was exactly two months before my fall on the porch. Tsk, tsk..
#1529 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 28, 2025 One of the ways God speaks to me is through events. Today I was backing out of our garage and I ran into my sister-in-law’s car parked in the driveway, causing minor damage to her vehicle. Here is God’s message to me: Dallin, you are getting older. Tasks like driving a car and taking a shower and climbing a ladder contain potential dangers that you wouldn’t think about ten years ago. You need to slow down. Focus on the task at hand. Be present. Trust Me.
In the words of Bob Dylan: “When you gonna wake up and strengthen the things that remain?”

Family Sunday, gratefully…
#1530 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
August 17, 2025 I’ve heard that God doesn’t make any two snowflakes alike. That’s nothing compared to how He fashions us! Exhibit A: my six granddaughters. Oh my goodness, each one is so unique–no one size fits all here. I have to pray to God to figure out how to interact with each one. It can be like juggling quicksilver. Yet when a connection is made, it is so much fun! Thank You, Lord, for our six snowflakes
