Striving for single-mindedness…
#1434 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 7, 2025 “…a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways..” (James 1:8). James is cautioning me. I can’t dip my toes in and out of the Living Water. I may not be able to stay constantly aware, but I must always be ready to make a choice, i.e., “…you cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matthew 6:24). That would be double-minded.

A Golf Tuesday with a gift…
#1435 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 15, 2025 God gave me a Titleist. I came out on my back porch to pray and to write, and there it was, sitting about five yards outside my fence–no one playing the hole. You might think how ridiculous! you found a golf ball! big deal! But if life is a river I’m paddling down, and God is the Architect/Operator, and a Titleist happens to float by, that is a bit of a miracle (Titleists can’t float). Thanks, God

I’m in the mood for God…
#1436 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April 16, 2025. Although I am still subject to moods good and bad, high and low, I don’t believe they should affect my behavior or hold much sway with my temperament. The root of most of my mood swings seems to be self-absorption. I have allowed the wrong person to ascend to the throne. Take Your rightful place, Lord Jesus, and I promise to calm down.

Lord of the Rings could be my all-time favorite story…
#1437 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 1, 2025 “All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken
The crownless again shall be king.”
–J.R.R. Tolkien
In these dark times I think of MAGA as Mordor. This is a poem of Hope. Appearances are deceiving. What is truly good, what is truly noble, it shall be triumphant.

My kind of journey…
#1438 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April 17, 2025 I know a number of Christians who struggle with joy–I am supposed to be happy–I am supposed to be at peace–I am supposed to be stress-free. Today’s quiet time addressed that: “The soul’s journey into God, as St. Bonaventure put it, was to learn how to see the unity of all being, how to look for this partially hidden God, and how to honor those footprints everywhere once you could see them. It was a surrender to gratitude–and also to immense confidence that you were a part of something very good.” –Richard Rohr

Ah, senior living…
#1439 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
September 26, 2024 John Prine’s analysis of old age:
“You know that old trees just get stronger/ Old rivers grow wilder every day/ Old people just grow lonesome/ Waiting for someone to say Hello in there, hello.”
My philosophy of old age:
“…he not busy being born is busy dying.” –Bob Dylan
“…all you need is love.” –the Beatles
“He (God) shall be a restorer of your life and a nourisher of your old age. –(Ruth 4:15)

Family Sunday on the mend…
#1440 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April 22, 2025 I had a little spat with Karen on the back porch. I headed for my study–she headed to the shower. My nerves were jangly; I decided to meditate, turning my mind, heart, soul and spirit toward God. I set my timer for 13 minutes. Oh, it wasn’t verbal, but God told me to forget about the trivial matter that triggered the argument, remember how lucky we are to have each other, and concentrate on moving forward and enjoying the evening. The timer went off. Apparently, she got the same message in the shower. We hugged, ate dinner, and did what God said.
