August 20, 2025 I saw my very first ruby-throated hummingbird of the year today (seems kind of late). Must like it here because she’s come back to the feeder at least 8 times. Hope she hangs around. That bright red band on the neck kills me. Nice job, Lord

September 8, 2025 Dealing with insomnia after having rotator cuff surgery: Having tried concentrated breathing, mantras, and prayers, I told Jesus that I didn’t know how to fall asleep, I couldn’t find the switch (if there is one), I was tired of striving, I knew He was present in the room, and if He wanted me asleep He would have to put me there. I wish I could report a smooth passage into somnolence, but I did rest more comfortably.

Obviously, rotator cuff surgery with a 5–6 month recovery period is a setback in my life. God has made it clear to me that it’s how I react to this setback that matters. This is an invitation, not a closed door.

September 17, 2025 Every so often there is a voice in my head that says “You should do this…” The voice isn’t random and the intention is pure–like a flower blooming in the fertile soil of my brain. I think of it as the Holy Spirit speaking through my conscience. Tonight the voice told me “While you are recovering from your surgery, you should take your wife on a road trip to the Grand Canyon, an item on her bucket list.” What a great idea! Lead on, Holy Spirit
