#1308 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
December 21, 2024 A conversational parable:
Mother: What does your girlfriend like in you?
Son: She thinks I’m handsome, talented, clever, and a good dancer.
Mother: And what do you like about her?
Son: She thinks I’m handsome, talented, clever, and a good dancer.
One of the roadblocks to love–looking at a mirror instead of through a glass.

Golf Tuesday, relax and breathe…
#1309 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
January 3, 2024 A perfect illustration of why golf is a spiritual exercise: (I promise I don’t dress like this!)

Greatest Hits Vol. I
December 27, 2024 Karen and I went to see A Complete Unknown, the biopic about Bob Dylan’s rise to fame. We loved it. I remember vividly that my first spiritual epiphany via Dylan came when I realized the last stanza of Like a Rolling Stone was about freedom and joy, not alienation and loneliness. I have no illusions about Dylan being a saint (we are saints because of what Jesus has done for us, not because of what we have done), but he remains my favorite muse.

#1311 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
November 24, 2024 “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face.” (I Corinthians 13:12) I was thinking of that verse and I couldn’t remember the adverb: dimly. I have those moments when I see dimly–they are wonderful. I can’t wait for face to face!

#1312 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
January 2, 2024 I got this from Fr. Richard Rohr: “Your image of God creates you.” How I think about God determines what kind of person I am going to be. If my God is strict authoritarian or absentee father, who am I to be? Jesus taught us how to think about God. His God is irresistible.

#1313 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
January 8, 2025 When I was younger I used to bargain with God: Let me do what I want now and soon I will straighten up. As if the whole process depended upon me…utter nonsense. I didn’t need to promise Him–I needed to trust Him.

Family Sunday, Christmas flashback…
#1314 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
December 25, 2024 The Makeover. Agnes got a makeup kit for Christmas. I agreed to be a client with two rules: 1) they had to stop as soon as I said stop; and 2) they had to try to make me look better. Laughter is one of God’s underrated gifts. Everybody likes to laugh. The Bible doesn’t put great emphasis on laughing, I guess because it can be pure or mean. I suspect the makeover had a little of both. (as you can see, by time it ended the rules got kind of lax.)
