Him or me?
#1600 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April 27, 2026 “The Christian life is a process of having your natural self changed into a Christ self. One’s most private wishes, one’s point of view, are the things that have to be changed.” –C.S. Lewis
So many Christians are so zealous to change the world (Ten Commandments in the classroom, make abortion illegal, ban transgender procedures, deport Muslims) that they seem to have scant interest in allowing their own hearts to be changed. And that, as Lewis says, is where the Christian walk must be aimed.

Golf Tuesday, uh oh…#1601 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 3, 2026 I used to tell my students before a big test that in five years they would have no recollection of what their grade was, but if they cheated that stain on their character would still be with them. That same principle applies to golfers.

Bob Dylan’s 85th birthday…
#1602 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 24, 2026 I discovered Bob Dylan when I was 19 years old (58 years ago). There is no other artist (writer or poet or actor or director or musician or any other creator) who has had the impact on my personal growth that he has had. No one can turn a phrase like Bob — each new album contained some sort of revelation for me. I became a Christian in 1976 and I began praying for him. Then, miracle of miracles, he came out with Slow Train Coming in 1979, a purely Christian album that shocked his fans and brought me to my knees. When I get to heaven, if I’m still me and he’s still him (not sure how it’s going to work), I’m going to look for him — not to idolize but just to thank him for helping me along the way.

Pretty simple formula for navigating life…
#1603 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
April 10, 2026 “There is but one good; that is God. Everything is good when it looks to Him and bad when it turns from Him.” C.S. Lewis
I would add one caveat: If I am not bothering to look to Him then I am, in fact, turning from Him.

Please stop with the win–the–lottery prayers!
#1604 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 5, 2026 “Prayer is not asking. Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at His disposition and listening to His voice in the depths of our hearts.” –Mother Teresa
The proper approach to prayer is more about what I can do for God than what He can do for me.

It does an old teacher proud!
#1605 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 25, 2026 This poem is from one of the most talented students I had in my 34 years of teaching, Stacy Harless. It is wonderful to see that she is realizing her gift. The poem floored me. Bless you, Stacy.
LOOKING OUT
We’ve been standing here
neck craned,
eyes sky‑stuck,
waiting for something holy to drop like rain.
Waiting for a sign,
a shimmer,
a voice,
a lift.
Waiting for God to come down
when God keeps whispering
look out.
Not up.
Out.
Because ascension isn’t escape.
It’s invitation.
Not a disappearing act
but a widening one.
Jesus didn’t rise to leave us.
He rose to send us
into the places we keep pretending we can’t see.
And still—
we stand here,
feet planted,
faces tilted,
hoping heaven will crack open
and fix what we’re afraid to touch.
But the angels said
why are you staring at the sky?
As if to say:
He’s not up there anymore.
He’s out here.
In the faces you pass.
In the hands you hold.
In the neighbors you’d rather not notice.
In the ones who sleep on the steps
of the church you love.
Ascension is not about rising.
It’s about re‑orienting.
About turning your gaze
from the clouds
to the crowd.
From the promise of someday
to the ache of right now.
From the comfort of looking up
to the courage of looking out.
Because the miracle isn’t <just> in the sky.
It’s in the street.
In the Commons.
In the everyday.
In the way we choose to stay
with the ones the world steps around.
So today,
I lower my chin,
drop my shoulders,
and let my eyes fall level
with the people right in front of me.
I stop waiting for heaven to descend
and start noticing
how heaven keeps showing up
in the ones who never look up at all.
Ascension isn’t about where Jesus went.
It’s about where we’re willing to go.
Not up.
Out.
Always out.

Family Sunday, what a weekend!
#1606 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
May 31, 2026 It is dangerous to equate my own personal happiness with the movement of God’s Spirit in my life. My priorities are not God’s priorities (although I am trying to align mine that way). But sometimes it falls together. First off, we had Zack and Kallie and the girls over for dinner, and that is one of my favorite ways to eat dinner. Then Karen and I watched the Spurs become Western Conference champions. I know that God is every bit as concerned with the OKC fan’s disappointment as He is with my joy, but that doesn’t mean I have to contain it. Ask any Spurs fan — they are like a family and we are invited to join. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for Your unmerited favor directed towards me
