The two sides of Christmas…

Decem­ber 16, 2024 The first side is the family/presents/traditions/love side. That gets most of our atten­tion, and it’s no wonder–there is so much to do to get ready! If all goes well, it’s a mag­i­cal­ly blessed time. Then there’s the spir­i­tu­al side–more sub­tle and mys­ti­cal, but every bit as blessed. Hold­ing up our can­dles at the Christ­mas Eve ser­vice or say­ing grace from the heart over Christ­mas dinner…poignant moments that illu­mi­nate the hol­i­day. My key to both sides is to be aware that He is here with me celebrating.

Decem­ber 23, 2024 One of the rea­sons I moved to Texas–this is the group I get to play golf with two days before Christ­mas! And I could­n’t ask for a more fun bunch of men. (Fit­ting that Dan is our San­ta Claus, isn’t it, guys?). Thank You, Lord, for guid­ing my steps to this place. Mer­ry Christ­mas to all!

Decem­ber 20, 2024 “…grow in grace and knowl­edge of our Lord and Sav­ior Jesus Christ.” (II Peter 3:18) — St. Peter’s final instruc­tion to us. I get the ‘knowl­edge’ part–as a rela­tion­ship devel­ops, I know more and more about that per­son. But how do I grow in ‘grace’? Grace is God’s unde­served favor, kind­ness and mer­cy. It is not an achieve­ment or attainment–it is a pre-exist­ing con­di­tion. So the only way I can ‘grow in grace’ is to increase my aware­ness of what already is. Thank You for Your grace, Lord Jesus.

Decem­ber 12, 2024 The secret of the Chris­t­ian walk:
A woman dreamed she walked into a brand new shop in the mar­ket­place, and, to her sur­prise, found God behind the counter.
“What do you sell here?” she asked.
“Every­thing your heart desires,” said God.
Hard­ly dar­ing to believe what she was hear­ing, the woman decid­ed to ask for the best things a human could wish for. “I want peace of mind and love and hap­pi­ness and wis­dom and free­dom from fear,” she said. Then as an after­thought she added, “Not just for me. For every­one on earth.”
God smiled. “I think you’ve got me wrong, my dear,” He said. “We don’t sell fruits here. Only seeds.”

Fam­i­ly Sun­day as Christ­mas recedes…
#1293 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
Decem­ber 26, 2024 The day after Christ­mas and by 5:30 a.m. every­one was gone except for Karen and me. We spent the day in an emo­tion­al jet lag. The Christ­mas tree and all the lights had lost their lus­ter. The rou­tines of dai­ly liv­ing seemed emp­ty. The day was drear. And then I real­ized the hole in my heart cre­at­ed by the huge space my fam­i­ly occu­pies would, as ever, be filled and vital­ized by the pres­ence of the Holy Spir­it. Ah, peace.
