Just look around…#1689 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
December 3, 2025 Another gem from Sister Joan Chittister: God is beauty, the theologians taught, and the universe is the irradiation of God’s beauty. We see the face of God in the natural beauty of the world around us. Augustine was clear: “It is the desire for the beautiful that draws us to God.”

I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now. –Bob Dylan
#1690 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
December 10, 2025 Eight years ago I wrote this assessment of my Christian life and my teaching career: All along I knew I was only scratching the surface of my relationship with Him. I was a nominal Christian floating in the midstream. I checked out okay on the exteriors: good on the Bible reading (I like to read), weak on church attendance (still don’t love church but I’ve gained an appreciation for it), no major David/Bathsheba transgressions but too many minor self-indulgences. Naturally, when major crises arose, I would become devout, and when they passed I would slip back into complacency. Still He blessed me.
The last sentence is the whole story. I had a wonderful teaching career. God is completely aware of my shortcomings. He wants me to become more aware of His abundance.

#1691 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
January 28, 2026 A wonderful illustration of faith without works being dead. Always, at all times, the success of my venture depends upon God. But here, at the ever-present time, I am called upon to put forth my best effort. It is an unbeatable combination.

He not busy being born is busy dying… –Bob Dylan#1692 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
November 17, 2025 paradox — (n.) — a seemingly contradictory statement or concept that holds a deeper truth. It’s not possible to understand the deeper truths of the Bible without a clear grasp of what paradox is — the New Testament is full of them, c.f., “…the first shall be last…” or “…the greatest is servant of all…” or “…when we are weak we are strong…” Unfortunately, they seem to fly over some Christians’ heads.

#1693 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
January 30, 2026 After the heart-breaking flooding in the Hill Country of Texas on the 4th of July, my sister told me she could never believe in a God who could allow this to happen. I wish I had shared this with her:
“No reason of man can justify God in a world like this. He must justify Himself, and He did so in the cross of His Son.”
–P.T. Forsythe

I’ll bet there are no cellphones in heaven…#1694 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
January 20, 2026. I remember telling my tennis kids that even if I won the lottery I would never own a cellphone. Later I told them I might have a phone but I would never text. Haha. I acknowledge that my phone is very useful–for communication and information and entertainment. But I shudder every Sunday when a blurb pops us telling me how much time I have averaged on my phone that week. I and many of us have exchanged a good portion of our natural lives for an online world. (Photo of statue in New Orleans City Park sculpture

Grace upon grace, blessing upon blessing on Family Sunday…#1695 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
February 6, 2026 Who do you think won that jump ball? My son, through the generosity of his clientele, snagged us fifth row seats for the Mavs vs. our beloved Spurs. Cooper Flagg vs. Victor Wembanyama should be a classic rivalry for the next 15 years. And yes, His mercy is everlasting — Spurs won 135–123.
