#865 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
November, 2023 I am moving from the material to the spiritual–we all are. That involves embracing the spiritual and letting go of the material–not abruptly, for this is a gradual progression. It helps to realize at some point in this journey everything I see is going to be gone…family, wealth, possessions. The spiritual is what is going to be left. That does not scare me; it comforts me. The direct source of the spiritual is God.

#866 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
December, 2023 God wants me to be content with myself, not pumped up or dismayed. That’s a difficult line to hold, because things like a good golf score or a well-received post or a genuine conversation can raise my spirits, and I generally come away feeling proud of myself. Conversely, a bad score or ignored post or angry exchange can send me plummeting. Contentment goes way deeper than self-satisfaction. Contentment has to include a taking from and a giving back to God.

#867 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
September, 2023 Sometimes a person can hold on as passionately to what has hurt her as she does to what she loves. That is called “…cutting off your nose to spite your face.” The only cure that I know is forgiveness.

January, 2024 God doesn’t direct, He guides. That’s why Jesus said “Follow me.”

#869 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
November, 2023 I’m reading a fascinating book, Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art by Madeleine L’Engle. This struck me today: “To be truly Christian means to see Christ everywhere, to know Him as all in all…I don’t mean to water down my Christianity into a vague kind of universalism, with Buddha and Mohammad all being more or less equal to Jesus–not at all! But neither do I want to tell God (or my friends) where He can and cannot be seen! We human beings tend far too often to codify God, to feel that we know where He is and where He is not, and this arrogance leads to such things as the Spanish Inquisition, the Salem Witch burnings, and has the result of further fragmenting an already broken Christendom.”

On the eve of the Super Bowl, a look back at last year…
#870 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
February, 2023 The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl last night. I took a neutral position. I will confess that I have in the past thrown up a prayer for my team (usually the San Antonio Spurs) to win. To try to engage God to favor one side in an athletic competition is patently absurd. I believe God is disinterested in the result of a contest but cares deeply about how that result affects each of us. With all the human drama and emotion involved in the game, Super Bowl Sunday must be a long day for God.

#871 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
December, 2023 I root for some sports teams simply because someone I love does. My son-in-law loooves the Red Wings–he would be filled with happiness if they could win the Stanley Cup (it’s been awhile). Even though he knows this feeling is temporary, transitory and ultimately unimportant, he would savor and enjoy it. I say Go Red Wings! (Thus I have to root for the Chiefs today because my daughter-in-law’s grandmother used to have a box at Arrowhead Stadium). Joy comes directly from God but He isn’t opposed to happiness.
