#781 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
September, 2023 “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” (Matthew 7:14). I am reminded of the fruitlessness of attempting to share my faith with someone who is not ready to hear it. Or, as my former muse Phil Ochs sang: “Soldiers disillusioned come home from the war/ Sarcastic students tell them not to fight no more/ And they argue through the night/ Black is black and white is white/ Walk away both knowing they are right.”

Golf Tuesday happens…
#782 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
October, 2023 I just returned from one of our senior men golf getaways. I must not take for granted how blessed I am to be able to participate in such events. This is where golf buddies become true friends, where people become more important than games, and where I acquire information that can guide me in prayer and service. And it is so much fun!

July, 2023 The Big Picture. God sees/knows the Big Picture. I am lucky when I catch glimpses of it, and it fills me with feelings of inexpressible gratitude. If I choose to block out the Big Picture, it is usually born of fear or selfishness. Let Your light shine, Lord Jesus.

#784 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
September 8, 2023 I saw my friend today, probably for the last time, in an ICU, suffering from heart and liver failure. It was a tragic visit–a shell of the man we knew, tubes coming out all over, foggy from drugs. We mourned him as we tried to comfort him. I do not understand how we the living can be so moved by the approach of death and at the same time invoke wars, encourage the sale of firearms, and allow starvation to exist on our planet. A life played out is not nearly as sad as a life cut short. I remain convinced that, for the aged, death is a kindness from God. (Gary died a day later.)

#785 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
October, 2023 Quiet time with C.S. Lewis: “Now the proper good of a creature is to surrender itself to its Creator–to enact intellectually, volitionally and emotionally, that relationship which is given in the mere fact of its being a creature. When it does so , it is good and happy… In the world as we know it, the problem is how to recover this self-surrender. We are not merely imperfect creatures who must be improved–we are…rebels who must lay down our arms.” Brilliant!

October, 2023 This full-ish moon has followed me all over Spain, whatever balcony I am sitting on. Light in the darkness, God’s beacon. When I go inside and lay down in bed, I can feel it shining through the walls. Never leave me, Lord Jesus.

Family Sunday in the park…
#787 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
November, 2023 My philosophy of marriage is that we are brought together for a purpose and that purpose is balance. I’m right and you’re wrong is the most destructive attitude you can bring into any situation. I believe the only way you can achieve balance is by learning to see things through your spouse’s eyes. “The two shall become one.” This is a lifetime subject in the school of life.
