Believe it or not, I’m starting to run low on marching orders. This is a good one…
#455 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
Thursday, November 24, 2022 A rather obvious marching order on Thanksgiving Day: *Be thankful. I want to allow thankfulness to wash over me. Taking things for granted is like closing up all your receptors. I choose to wake up in anticipation and to go to bed in contentment. If I receive life as a gift, I can’t help but give back. Thankfulness is relational, not abstract; intentional, not random. I like to greet my golf buddies in the morning with “Another day in paradise!” Thank You, Lord.

Sure doesn’t seem like Golf Tuesday outside (25 degrees)…
#456 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
Thursday, January 5, 2023 One of the things I loved about having my own golf cart was that I could imagine Jesus was riding along with me while I played. That is called practicing the presence of God, and I heartily endorse it. It’s not so easy when you’re riding along with another guy. I feel a responsibility to behave properly when I’m playing–to control my emotions, to be of good cheer, to be fair and honest, to respect the course. But I can do all of that without acknowledging His presence. That is when it becomes a spiritual exercise.

#457 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
Sunday, January 8, 2023 C.S. Lewis called it Mere Christianity..I call it Real Christianity: “…though Christianity seems at first to be all about morality, all about duties and rules and guilt and virtue, yet it leads you on, out of all that, into something beyond. One has a glimpse of a country where they do not talk of these things, except perhaps as a joke. Everyone there is filled full of what we should call goodness as a mirror is filled with light. But they do not call it goodness. They do not call it anything. They are too busy looking at the source from which it comes.”

#458 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
Saturday, December 31, 2022 Love this anecdote: In 1861 a supporter of President Lincoln said to him, “I certainly hope the Lord is on the side of the North.” Lincoln thought for a moment then responded: “About that I am not at all concerned, but only that we should be on the side of the Lord.” Brilliance.

#459 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
Friday, December 30, 2022 From all indications the remainder of my life is going to be spent mostly around old people (like me). I am perfectly content with that. I think this is where God wants me to be. Old folks share a perspective that is highly different from the earlier stages. We have to come to grips with death–it’s a silent march, but we all are on it. But I have more time than I’ve ever had. My plan is to live in the moment and do good. I know by faith that this is a triumphant march.

#460 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
Saturday, November 19, 2022 God has been using the image of a river with me (journey-wise). Of course there are all sorts of backwashes and splits and even swamps. But there’s always a main current. If I can remain attached to that main current, I will move along quite nicely. Move me, Holy Spirit.

#461 HOW GOD SPOKE TO ME TODAY
Sunday, December 11, 2022 “Yes, Lord, I believe; help me in my unbelief.” (Mark 9:24) That’s not just for when I was a young believer. It’s just as true for me now. You can’t measure unbelief–it is a shifting sand. I used to think if I doubted, I was somehow betraying the Lord. He’s not looking for blind devotion–He wants my trust. Believe or doubt…it is always a choice. The key words in the verse are “..help me”…and “Yes, Lord..”
